Heavy tension prevailed in Dholahat in South 24 Parganas on Tuesday as locals protested in front of the local police station, with some protesters even trying to enter it by breaking the barricades.

It is being told that the youth was arrested by the police on June 30 on charges of jewelery theft. Family members alleged that during the period of custody, he was beaten in several stages, which was evident from his injuries that were visible when he was produced in the district court on July 4. He was granted bail that day and sent to a local hospital, where he was discharged after some first aid.

Halder's mother Taslima Bibi claimed that when he returned home his condition started deteriorating, following which he was shifted to a hospital in Kolkata. Later he was admitted to a private nursing home for comprehensive treatment. However, he died late on Monday night and after receiving information on Tuesday morning, protests started in Dholahat.
