Around 22.64 per cent voting was recorded in six Lok Sabha constituencies and 42 assembly constituencies till 11 am in Odisha's Bhubaneswar, where voting is underway in the last phase of simultaneous elections in the state on Saturday, the official said.
An elderly man collapsed while standing in the queue at a polling booth in Ishwarpur in Nilgiri assembly constituency of Balasore district. He said that he was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
One person was injured in a group clash outside a polling booth in Gop under Jagatsinghpur Lok Sabha seat.
Voting began at 7 am in 42 assembly constituencies falling under these Lok Sabha seats as well as in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur parliamentary constituencies.Odisha Chief Electoral Officer N B Dhall said polling has been peaceful so far at 10,882 polling stations, barring a few reports of EVM malfunctions, which were mostly resolved or in some cases the machines were replaced.
He said the ECI has replaced 79 Ballot Units (BUs), 106 Control Units (CUs) and 233 VVPATs. Voting was smooth at all places.
Officials said that till 11 am, about 22.64 percent of over 99.61 lakh voters exercised their franchise.
He said Balasore recorded the highest turnout of 27.66 percent, followed by Kendrapar (24.03), Jagatsinghpur (23.01), Mayurbhanj (22.25), Bhadrak (21.50), and Jajpur (17.10).
A total of 66 candidates are in the fray for Lok Sabha seats, while 39 candidates are contesting assembly constituencies in the fourth and final phase of simultaneous voting in the eastern state.Prominent candidates in this phase include Odisha Assembly Speaker Pramila Malik, chief whip in the government of Prasanta Kumar Mudili, and half a dozen Odisha ministers Sudam Marndi, Ashwini Patra, Preetiranjan Ghadai, Atanu S Nayak, Pratap Deb and K Behera.
Besides, four sitting MPs – Pratap Sarangi (Balasore), Manju Lata Manda (Bhadrak), Sarmistha Sethi (Jajpur) and Rajshree Malik (Jagatsinghpur) – are in the fray from their respective seats.
