Guwahati: The flood situation further improved on Friday with water levels in major rivers and their tributaries receding, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

However, around 1.07 lakh people in five districts of the state are still suffering due to the disaster, and one more person lost his life in Barpeta, taking the death toll so far in this year's floods, landslides and storms to 42 .

More than 1.15 lakh people suffered from the floods on Thursday.

As the intensity of rain reduced, the water level of all major rivers fell below the danger mark, officials said.

A total of 383 villages in Barpeta, Cachar, Dhemaji, Kamrup and Karimganj districts are still affected by the floods. ASDMA said Cachar is the worst affected, with 74,870 people suffering, followed by Karimganj, where 29,128 people are battling flood waters.

Overall, 129 relief camps and relief distribution centers are running and 14,073 people are taking shelter there, it said.

A total of 683.02 hectares of crop land has been damaged. Besides, embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have also been damaged by flood waters in Barpeta, Kamrup, Karimganj, Cachar, Hailakandi, Dhemaji and Bongaigaon, ASDMA said.
