The House voted 359-43 on Wednesday on a resolution by Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia to remove Johnson from office, with seven Democrats voting "absent", Xinhua news agency reported.

Greene reiterated her proposal to oust fellow Republican and House speaker Johnson on the House floor Wednesday evening. But House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, immediately proposed introducing the measure.

The Washington Post reported, "A notable number of House Republicans joined with Democrats to defend the speaker, who has been on the job for just over six months," adding that Johnson had pushed Gov. It earned grudging respect from more traditional Republicans, to be sure. There was no shortage of funding and aid sent to U.S. allies Israel and Ukraine, but they did so only with Democratic support, angering members like Greene.

Johnson is also encouraged by the endorsement of former US President Donald Trump, who reiterated his support for the Louisiana Republican over the weekend, the report said.

This is the second time in less than a year that Republicans have sought to remove the speaker of their own party. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California was forced out of the job in October through a motion filed by a fellow Republican Party member.

Green has called for Johnson's removal in recent weeks, primarily over the US AI package for Ukraine. It's the latest sign of continuing Republican infighting.
