New Delhi: Imports of vegetable oils, including edible and non-edible oils, rose 18 per cent to 15.5 lakh tonnes in June due to higher imports of crude palm oil and crude sunflower oil, according to trade data.

Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) data showed that imports of vegetable oils stood at 15,50,659 tonnes during June 2024, compared to 13,14,476 tonnes in the year-ago period.

Import of edible oils increased to 15,27,481 tonnes in June, from 13,11,576 tonnes in the same month last year. However, imports of non-edible oils increased by 2,300 tonnes to 23,178 tonnes in the period under review.

During the first eight months of the 2023-24 oil year ending October, imports of vegetable oils fell 2 per cent to 1,02,29,106 tonnes compared to 1,04,83,120 tonnes in the same period last year.

SEA data showed that refined oil imports declined by 2 per cent to 13,81,818 tonnes during the period November 2023-June 2024 of the 2023-24 oil year from 14,03,581 tonnes in the same period last year.

Import of crude edible oils also declined by 3 percent to 87,13,347 tonnes as compared to 89,63,296 tonnes. The share of refined oils (RBD palmolein) and crude oil remained the same.

During the period between November 2023 and June 2024, palm oil imports declined to 57,63,367 tonnes from 6031,529 tonnes in the year-ago period. Also, soft oil imports fell to 43,31,799 tonnes from 43,35,349 tonnes.

India imports palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia and soybean oil from Brazil and Argentina.
