Shimla: According to the Election Commission, the Congress won the by-elections on three assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday and is leading on one, while the BJP has won two seats.

From Badsar Assembly seat, BJP candidate Indra Dutt Lakhanpal defeated Congress's Subhash Chand by 2125 votes.

BJP's Sudhir Sharma won the assembly by-election from Dharamshala, defeating his nearest rival and Congress candidate Devinder Singh Jaggi by a margin of 5,526 votes.

Congress candidates have also won the by-elections in Lahaul and Spiti, Sujanpur and Gagret seats, while its candidates are leading in Kutlehar.

In a triangular contest in Lahaul and Spiti by-election, Congress candidate Anuradha Rana defeated her nearest rival and independent candidate Ram Lal Markanda by a margin of 1,960 votes.Anuradha Rana became the first woman to contest elections from Lahaul and Spiti in 52 years. Second woman to win from the assembly constituency.

He got 9,414 votes against Markanda's 7,454 votes, while BJP candidate Ravi Thakur came third with 3,049 votes.

In Sujanpur, Congress rebel and now BJP candidate Rajinder Rana lost to Ranjit Singh by a margin of 2,440 votes.

Rajinder Rana, who defeated former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal in the 2017 assembly elections, got 27,089 votes, while Singh got 29,529 votes.The Election Commission has officially declared the results. BJP candidate from Gagret, Chaitanya Sharma lost to his Congress rival and BJP leader Rakesh Kalia by 8,487 votes.

Kalia had contested the elections as a Congress candidate after BJP made Chaitanya its candidate.

The by-elections were held on June 1 along with the elections for four Lok Sabha seats.

The assembly constituencies where by-elections were held are Sujanpur, Dharamshala, Lahaul and Spiti, Badsar, Gagret and Kutlehar.

Six assembly seats fell vacant after Congress rebels were disqualified for violating the whip to vote in favor of the Congress-ruled state government during the budget.The six rebel MLAs later voted for the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections on February 29. Joined BJP and the party fielded them from their respective assembly constituencies.
