Guwahati: The victory of Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi was no less than a miracle as he took over the entire power of the ruling government from the prestigious Jorhat Lok Sabha seat of Assam.

With Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spending several nights and several of his ministers, MLAs and other leaders camping in the constituency for weeks, the contest between Gaurav and BJP's Topon Kumar Gogoi was looking akin to Abhimanyu's epic battle in the Mahabharata.

According to the Election Commission, Gaurav Gogoi snatched the Jorhat seat from the ruling BJP by defeating Topon Kumar Gogoi by a margin of 1,44,393 votes.

Topon Kumar Gogoi was trying to win the election for the second consecutive time, while Gaurav was a two-time MP from Kaliabor constituency, which was renamed as Kaziranga in the delimitation.

After delimitation, Gaurav, deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, was tasked with taking on the BJP in Jorhat, which has become a stronghold of the ruling party in the last 10 years.

No national face of the BJP came to campaign in Jorhat, while Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led a massive road show in Titabor, the assembly constituency of Gaurav's father and former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi. The entire campaign for Topon Gogoi was led by CM Sarma, who addressed several meetings and held several road shows covering all the 10 assembly constituencies under Jorhat Lok Sabha seat.

"I am like Abhimanyu, who entered the Chakravyuh and died. But in this fight, I will break the Chakravyuh and emerge victorious," Gaurav had said before voting in Jorhat on April 19.

Jorhat has 17,32,944 voters, of which 8,78,356 are women, 8,54,583 are men and 5 are third gender.

Although Gaurav has always been vocal against the BJP government inside and outside the House, he came into limelight after moving a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government in August last year. His speech immediately became popular, especially among the youth.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Gogoi had won by a margin of 82,653 votes, securing 5,43,288 votes, while Congress's Sushant Borgohain, who later joined the saffron party, had secured 4,60,635 votes.

Gaurav, 41, first tasted electoral democracy in 2014 when he contested the Lok Sabha elections when his father was the CM of Assam. He won and was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha from Kaliabor.

Gogoi, considered a confidant of Rahul Gandhi, became a member of several House committees, such as the Standing Committee on Railways, the Consultative Committee on the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the Committee on Violation of Protocol Norms and Disrespectful Behavior of Government Officials with Members of the Lok Sabha.,

Gaurav was re-elected to the lower house from Kaliabor for the second consecutive time in 2019. This time, he was nominated as a member of the Standing Committee on Finance, Committee on Government Assurances and the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of North Eastern Development.
