Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Friday said the Kuwait fire incident was a tragedy beyond words and expressed hope that it would never happen again in future.

While talking to journalists, Khan also said that there is a need to think long term about why people are forced to leave their homes and go abroad for employment.

"They have no option but to go abroad in search of jobs as there are no opportunities available locally. So, we need to think something long term," he said.

Khan also said that now is not the time to think long term.

Khan said, "This is the time when we have to sympathize with the bereaved families and honestly, I have no words. This is such a serious and heart-breaking tragedy that no one knows what to say."

An Indian Air Force (IAF) flight landed at Cochin International Airport at around 10.30 am, carrying the bodies of 45 Indians who died in the fire.

Of them, the remains of 31 – 23 from Kerala, 7 from Tamil Nadu and one from Karnataka – were received at the airport by Union and state ministers and political leaders.

Officials had said on Thursday that 49 people were killed in the Al-Mangaf building fire on June 12 and 45 of them were Indians. The rest were Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and Nepalese nationals.

About 195 migrant workers lived in the building in the Mangaf area of southern Kuwait.
