Those retired include doctors, police officers, teachers, clerks, drivers, peons and others working in various state government offices, including the state secretariat.

In Kerala, all state government employees retire at the age of 56.

Incidentally, all those whose date of birth falls in May and have turned 56 years old retire on May 31. And this time, more than 16,000 employees are retiring at the same time.

Interestingly, the only reason for such a large number of retirees on a single day is the date of birth recorded by their parents at the time of school admission several decades ago.

To ensure admission in the school the parents mention the date of birth matching with the month of June for admission. Therefore, the date of birth of 16,000 retired employees is near June.

The number of retirees on May 31 last year was 11,800.

The practice of changing the date of birth used to happen earlier also. This no longer happens as the hospital registers each birth and files it with the local body, which issues the birth certificate.

Many employees retiring on Friday were given a tearful farewell. Also, it is also a happy day for the serving people who get the much awaited promotion. Also, new vacancies will be created which will give hope to people waiting for their dream government job.

But things are not easy for the cash-strapped Pinarayi Vijayan government, who will have to pay an additional Rs 9,000 crore as retirement benefits to 16,000 retirees.
