The Liverpool-born defender becomes the second foreigner to remain at the club in four years after Rafael Crivellaro. Edwards was named club captain for the 2023/24 season and made 25 appearances in all competitions, including two goals and one assist.

He soon became popular among the Chennaiyin faithful due to his leadership passion, resilience and influence on the young Indian players who played alongside him. The Englishman has also been praised for his willingness to put his body on the line and his brilliant presence in the opposition box.

“Ryan's extension is already one of the biggest signings for the upcoming season. It was important that we put someone in who knows what we are doing at this club and where we want to take it. What often goes unnoticed is that he is loved by everyone at the club and the boys look at him as a leader in the dressing room. I really believe he can develop as a captain and player at Chennaiyin,” head coach Owen Coyle commented on the extension.

Edwards previously played for Scottish team Dundee United, where he made 11 appearances and scored eight goals over three seasons in all competitions, including 92 appearances in the Scottish First Division.

On joining the club for another year, Ryan Edwards said, “I'm looking forward to another season in the ISL and after taking a good first step in qualifying for the playoffs, hopefully this time I can help the team Can help win some silver medals.,

Halfway through the 2021/22 season, Edwards was handed the captain's armband and led the team to fourth place in the Premiership, helping his team qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League qualification round. He captained the team 53 times in all competitions.

He demonstrated leadership qualities at an early age, as he captained the Blackburn FC team that reached the final of the 2011/12 FA Youth Cup.
