Kiefer paid tribute to his late father online, writing: "It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. Personally, I believe he is one of the greatest actors in film history. He never shied away from a role, good, bad or ugly, he loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that.

Sutherland played President Snow in the Hunger Games franchise films, and the official account paid tribute to the late actor: "We asked the kindest man in the world to play the most corrupt and ruthless dictator we have ever seen. Such was the era. The power and "acting ability of Donald Sutherland created one most indelible character among many others that defined his legendary career. We are privileged to have known him and worked with him, and our thoughts are with his family."

Helen Mirren also paid tribute to Sutherland.
