CHENNAI: Main opposition AIADMK on Saturday alleged that the DMK regime's 'Kuruvai' special package scheme for farmers is a 'scam' to hide its failure to get its due share of Cauvery water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said the ruling DMK had failed to persuade the Congress party in power in the neighboring state to get Cauvery water from Karnataka, which is a key component of the India bloc.

In a post on 'X', the former chief minister said the 'Kuruvai' special package scheme costing Rs 78.67 crore will neither be able to wipe the tears nor alleviate the suffering of the farmers in the delta region of the state. The scheme is a 'hoax' to hide the failure of the DMK regime to provide water to Tamil Nadu.

“The scheme has been announced in a hurry without considering the needs of the farmers in the Cauvery delta region,” he alleged.,

Opposition leader Palaniswami said the DMK government should release water from Karnataka keeping in mind the welfare of farmers in the Cauvery delta region.

On June 14, 2024, Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister M R K Panneerselvam said that the 'Kuruvai' special package scheme will be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 78.67 crore. Traditionally, water is released from the Mettur Dam on 12 June every year, for the purpose of short-term 'Kuruvai' paddy cultivation. Panneerselvam had said that since there is not enough storage in the dam this year, there is a delay in releasing water for farming in the delta areas.Under the scheme, which envisages a number of support measures to help farmers, 2,000 tonnes of paddy seeds for about one lakh acres will be distributed at subsidized rates through agricultural extension centres. Panneerselvam had said that the Kuruvai Special Package Scheme would be implemented through state funding and by integrating various related government schemes.
