New Delhi: Congress on Sunday accused the Central government of trying to weaken the Land Acquisition Act since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also alleged that BJP-ruled states have weakened the law by not following it and are acquiring land in violation of the provisions.

In a video message posted on Twitter, he termed the Modi government as "anti-farmer" and said farmers have not been given the land price prescribed by law.

The Congress general secretary said that in September 2013, when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister, a progressive and historic bill for land acquisition was brought, which replaced the Land Acquisition Act of 1894.

The main highlight of this law was the four-fold increase in compensation amount in rural areas and two-fold increase in urban areas.Rames claimed that there was also a provision that no land would be acquired without the consent of the farmers.

Conditions were also put in place to apply the law with retrospective effect and if the company acquiring the land was unable to utilize it in five years, it would have returned to the farmer, he said in the video message.

He said that under the law, land used for multiple crops and cultivated multiple times would not be acquired as it could have a negative impact on the food security of the country.

"Ever since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, he has been working on weakening the law since 2014 and BJP ruled states have weakened the law and farmers are not getting adequate compensation. The acquired land is not being used for that purpose. It is not being done for what it is meant for, it is being taken over and government institutions are responsible,” Ramesh alleged. He claimed, "The real culprit is the Modi government, which has weakened the law and is working to dismantle it by ignoring its sections."

Ramesh also said, "In this video I have put forward some facts about the land acquisition law passed by the Manmohan Singh government. Since 2014, anti-farmer Narendra Modi is continuously trying to weaken it."
