According to a source, Suhail Thanalot, a senior crew member of AIE and a native of Thilenkeri in Kannur district, was caught following intelligence input of evidence compiled by the DRI regarding his involvement in the gold smuggling incident.

He was arrested three days after he was arrested by the DRI for trying to smuggle nearly a kilogram of gold from Muscat to Kannur by hiding it in the rectum of Kolkata-based Surabhi Khatoon. He was sent to judicial custody on Thursday.According to the source, Suhail, who has around 10 years of experience as a cabbie crew, is suspected to have played a key role in recruiting Khatoon into the smuggling syndicate.

The source said he will be produced before a judicial magistrate with a remand request.

Regarding Khatoon's arrest, Air India Express had confirmed that the Customs Department is investigating an incident involving their employee.

However, the airline has not reacted to Suhail's arrest.

Based on specific intelligence from DRI Cochin, officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI - Kannur) stopped Khatoon.

His personal search resulted in the recovery of 960 grams of smuggled gall in mixed form which was hidden in his rectum.
