Shanghang, in south-eastern Fujian province, experienced continuous rain for 24 hours, affecting about 66,500 people, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

The situation remains tense in other areas of Southern China.

Heavy rain was forecast in Guangxi, Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces on Wednesday. Authorities have issued warnings about the increased risk of flooding, especially in northern parts of Guangxi and Fujian, where many rivers are located.

The provinces have already suffered economic losses estimated at millions of dollars.

While China's southern provinces are experiencing heavy rain, northern areas around Beijing are suffering from a heat wave, with temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius again in some areas on Wednesday.

In response to the flood and drought situation, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for all possible measures to help the affected people.
