Bijapur: At least one Maoist surrendered on Tuesday in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, including two with a total bounty of Rs 13 lakh on their heads, amid a crackdown by security forces on leftist extremism.

Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Yadav said that among them, Arun Kadti (21) was a member of People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) Battalion No. 1 of the banned CPI (Maoist).

Kadati, who had a bounty of Rs 8 lakh on his head, was involved in the 2022 attack on security forces at Tekulagudem in Sukma, in which three CRPF personnel were killed and 14 others were injured, they said.

Another Naxalite, Ramesh Hemla alias Munna (42), had a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head. He was the Matwara Local Squad Organization (LOS) commander as well as an Area Committee Member (ACM), Yadav said, adding that a total of 42 warrants were pending against Hemla.

They were given immediate assistance of Rs 25,000 each and facilities would be provided as per the surrender and rehabilitation policy of the government, he said.

Notably, security forces have stepped up crackdown on Naxalites in areas affected by Leftist Naxalism in Chhattisgarh.

In the second major encounter in 15 days, ten Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces on the border of Narayanpur and Kanker districts on Tuesday, 30 km from Kalper village in Kanker, where 29 Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces. April 16, police said.

According to police, 91 Naxalites have been killed so far this year in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, which includes seven districts including Narayanpur and Kanker.
