Thane: A portion of a two-storey building declared 'dangerous' collapsed on Wednesday in Bhiwandi city of Maharashtra's Thane district.



Raju Warlikar, head of the disaster management cell of Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation, said that six people were rescued from the building after the incident which occurred around 10 pm on Tuesday night.

The building, located in the Bhandari complex and comprising 15 houses, was declared dangerous and unfit for occupation, he said.

He said the owner of the building has been asked to ensure that it is evacuated.



The official said that on Tuesday night some people had come to sleep on its first floor, when the stairs to the second floor collapsed.



After receiving the information, local fire personnel and disaster management team reached the spot.



Bhiwandi Municipal Commissioner Ajay Vaidya supervised the rescue operation.



Warlikar said that the remaining part of the staircase collapsed after the incident and the demolition work of the building would be done on Wednesday.



"We have strict instructions to vacate and demolish dangerous buildings before the monsoon. We will do the same in this case too," he said.
