The field for the World Athletics Platinum Label race on 21 April was considered one of the deepest and highest quality women's fields ever and made no secret of the fact that Mary Catney's 2:17 was the only women's field. The world record was broken. :01 was a big target.

Ultimately, it was Jepchirchir who succeeded in achieving it. Seven women remained in the pack as they reached the halfway point in 1:07:04 – the second fastest half-way split ever in London and a mark that set them up to break the record by almost three minutes.

Jepchirchir won in 2:16:16, seven seconds ahead of Tigist Assefa. Joycelyn Jepkosgei was third (2:16:24) and Magertu Alemu was fourth (2:16:34), making it the first marathon in which four women finished under 2:17.

On Wednesday, Devin Charlton set a new world record in the women's indoor 60 meters hurdles.

On 3 March in Glasgow, Bahamian hurdler Charlton lowered the 60 meters hurdles world record to 7.65 as he captured his first global title at the World Athletics Indoor Championships.

Charlton previously shared the world record of 7.67 with Tia Jones of the United States. Charlton accomplished the feat in New York on February 11, with Jones equaling it in Albuquerque just five days later.
