Local media reported that the minister was charged with domestic assault after being arrested in the eastern Sydney suburb of Bondi on Saturday morning, Xinhua news agency reported.

It says police were called to an address in Bondi at around 10am local time on Saturday morning after receiving reports of a domestic dispute. Officers spoke to a 31-year-old woman who suffered facial injuries, which reportedly resulted from an altercation with a 58-year-old man she knew.

The man was arrested, and taken to the police station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Local media also quoted a statement from Maladina saying he was "fully cooperating with the authorities".

It said the minister has been granted conditional bail and will face court on Thursday.
