Pune: Six cases of Zika virus infection have been reported in Pune city, health officials said on Monday.

He said that two pregnant women are also included among the patients.

"A 28-year-old pregnant woman from Erandwane area was diagnosed with Zika virus infection. Her report came positive on Friday. Another woman, who is 12 weeks pregnant, was diagnosed with the infection on Monday. The condition of both the women is as follows They are fine and have no symptoms,” an official said.

In pregnant women, Zika virus can cause microcephaly (a condition in which the head becomes too small due to abnormal brain development) in the fetus.

"The first case of Zika virus infection was reported in Erandwane when a 46-year-old doctor tested positive. After that, samples of his 15-year-old daughter were also found positive. The other two cases are of a man, a 47-year-old woman and a 22-year-old woman. The year old male is a resident of Mundwa.

Zika virus disease is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which is also known to spread infections such as dengue and chikungunya. This virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947.

"The Pune Municipal Corporation's health department is monitoring. As a precaution, it is taking measures like fogging and fumigation to prevent mosquito breeding," he said.
