Chandigarh, Former Punjab Congress chief and former MP Mohinder Singh Kapi joined Shiromani Akali Dal on Monday.

SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal visited Kaypi's residence in Jalandhar to induct him into the party.

Badal declared Kaypi as the party candidate from Jalandhar Reserve parliamentary constituency.

Two days after Karamjit Kaur Choudhary, wife of late Congress MP Santokh Choudhary, joined the BJP in Delhi, the grand old party suffered a setback.

Kaypi, a prominent Dalit leader from the Doaba region, was a minister in the 1999 and 1995 Congress governments.

He became MP from Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and contested from Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha constituency in 2014 but was unsuccessful.

Kaypi has been elected MLA from Jalandhar South assembly seat three times – 1985, 1992 and 2002.

In 2017, he lost the Adampur assembly seat to SAD candidate Pawan Kumar Tinu.

Kaypi has a rich political heritage. His father Darshan Singh Kaypi was a five-time MLA from Jalandhar. He was assassinated by militants in 1992.
