Chandigarh, Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department has decided to provide subsidy on Kharif maize hybrid seeds and cover an area of ​​more than 4,700 hectares under maize demonstration.

Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian on Sunday said farmers can avail a subsidy of Rs 100 on the purchase of every 1 kg of hybrid maize seeds certified and recommended by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana.

An official statement quoted the minister as saying that the subsidy for hybrid kharif maize seeds will be provided for a maximum of 5 acres of area or 40 kg per farmer.

Khudian said a total of 2,300 quintals of seeds would be provided to the farmers of the state at subsidized prices.

He said a total area of ​​4,700 hectares would be covered under the maize demonstration, for which farmers would get financial assistance of Rs 6,000 per hectare for various inputs including fertilizers and pesticides.

The Agriculture Minister said that in order to save the groundwater and free the farmers of the state from excessive water-consuming paddy crop, the government has set a target of cultivating Kharif maize in a record 2 lakh hectares, which is more than last year. is almost double.

Urging farmers in the state to take maximum advantage of the scheme, Khudian said the subsidy amount will be transferred directly into the bank accounts of beneficiary farmers through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme to ensure transparency.

He said that interested farmers of the state can submit their applications on the online portal agrimachinerypb.com to avail subsidy on hybrid maize seeds.

He also asked the Agriculture Department officials to ensure strict monitoring of the seeds being sold in the state.

The minister said that only quality seeds should be provided to the farmers.
