Chandigarh Punjab Chief Secretary Anurag Verma on Thursday directed deputy commissioners to again visit vulnerable spots in their districts and ensure that flood protection work has been completed satisfactorily.

He directed officials to stay in touch with residents of villages near the vulnerable spots throughout the monsoon season.

Verma held a video conference meeting with all the deputy commissioners, according to an official statement.

He ordered them to be alert during the monsoon so that the public was not inconvenienced.

Krishan Kumar, principal secretary of the water resources department, informed the meeting that the level of the Bhakra dam was at 1,590 feet on Thursday, 8 feet below the level recorded during the corresponding period last year.

Similarly, the Pong dam level is 30 feet lower and the Ranjit Sagar dam level is 34 feet lower than last year, the official said.

Verma said flood protection work costing Rs 252 million was being carried out this year, which was almost 1.5 times the average work done during the last two years.

He ordered deputy commissioners to double-check that the cities' sewage systems had been cleaned.

They were also directed to review electricity agreements with Punjab State Power Corporation Limited so that there was minimum disruption during rains.

The deputy commissioners informed the chief secretary that they had evacuation plans ready in case of emergencies.

Flood control rooms have been established in all districts. Shelters for humans and animals have been identified in case of emergency, they said.

Last month, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann visited flood-prone areas along the Ghaggar river to assess preparations to deal with ground-level flooding ahead of the rainy season.

Several parts of Punjab and neighboring Haryana witnessed flooding due to heavy monsoon rains last year that claimed over 90 lives in the two states and caused extensive property damage.
