Visakhapatnam, Telugu Desam Party quitting the NDA in 2018 was not a mistake, senior party leader and former civil aviation minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju has said.

He said it is appropriate for the regional party to rejoin the alliance (NDA) as the BJP is saying it will do "something" for Andhra Pradesh.

The scion of the Vizianagaram royal family said he has not retired from politics but has decided not to contest the current elections due to health reasons.

His daughter Aditi is contesting against sitting YSR Congress MLA Kolagatla Veerabhadra Swamy from Vizianagaram assembly seat.

Aditi may face some headwinds as former TDP MLA Misal Geeta is contesting as an independent after being denied a ticket by the party led by former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.“I don’t think (TDP leaving NDA in 2018) was a mistake,” he said. Because what happened at that time, certain commitments were made in that law (AP Reorganization Act) which needed to be addressed. Some commitments were partially fulfilled, so perhaps we were a little impatient given the pace of it,” said Raj. After leaving the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in March 2018, the TD had also moved a no-confidence motion against the then chief minister. The NDA government created an uproar in the Lok Sabha over its refusal to grant "special category status" to the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh. Many more issues.

After a gap of six years, TDP returned to the NDA saying that it would come to power at the Centre, which would help the state in terms of development.

Raju said the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act had promised 11 institutions like IIMs and NITs and others, for which land was allotted.

However, people in the state have decided to bring in a "non-performing government and a time pass government" which will affect the progress of the institutions, he said while targeting the current YSR Congress government. Asked why the TDP decided to join the NDA, Raju said that though the UP government had brought the AP Reorganization Act in 2014, it could not implement it, while the BJP had promised that it would bring AP Reorganization Act in the state. Will implement the Reorganization Act. Will provide support for development.

Taking aim at the YSRCP government, he alleged that work on the Bhogapuram airport to be built for Visakhapatnam is not progressing as fast as it should. He said that the most satisfying thing in his political career was that his lineage from his forefathers onwards was able to preserve the glory of Telugu culture.

Vizianagaram, considered the cultural capital of Telugu, is home to the oldest music college and Sanskrit and oriental language institutes, he said.
