Bharuch, A stampede-like situation was witnessed after around 800 people showed up for walk-in interviews conducted by a company for 40 vacancies in Ankleshwar in Bharuch district of Gujarat, an official said on Thursday.

Videos of a massive queue, punctuated by pushing and shoving as hopefuls tried to hold on to a ramp leading to the entrance of a hotel where the interview was taking place, went viral on social media. The railing of the ramp finally collapsed, causing several applicants to fall, although no one was injured.

The incident, which took place on Tuesday, triggered a verbal duel between the opposition Congress and the ruling BJP.

While the Congress claimed to have exposed the "Gujarat model" (of development spoken of by the ruling party), the Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that the former was trying to defame the State through the video.

"According to our information, a company organized walk-in interviews for nearly 40 vacancies in five different positions. The company booked a room in a hotel in Ankleshwar expecting around 150 candidates. However, 800 turned up and the company officials had to close of the interview room to control the crowd, which led to the situation shown in the video," Bharuch Superintendent of Police Mayur Chavda said.

No one was injured in the melee and no complaint has been made to the police in this regard, Chavda added.

Tagging the video in a post on hotel railing broke and the The Gujarat model was exposed. Narendra Modi is imposing this model of unemployment throughout the country.

In response, the BJP, in a post on "Since those attending the interview are already employed elsewhere, the idea that these people are unemployed is unfounded."

Spreading negativity about Gujarat was a tactic of the Congress, the BJP added.

According to the advertisement, the company would fill the vacancies of shift manager, plant operator, supervisor-CDS, mechanic-installer and executive-ETP in its new plant in Jhagadia industrial area.
