Jamshedpur AICC executive committee member Dr Ajoy Kumar on Thursday said JMM leader Hemant Soren will be the face of INDIA block in the Jharkhand assembly elections later this year.

Soren, son of JMM supremo Shibu Soren, took oath as Jharkhand chief minister in Ranchi for the third time during the day after JMM leader Champai Soren resigned as CM on Wednesday.

“The change of guard in Jharkhand would not at all affect the prospects of the INDIA block in the assembly elections. In fact, we will do much better than in the 2019 polls,” Kumar said.

The Congress is a member of the JMM-led ruling coalition in Jharkhand. Another constituent of the INDIA bloc, RJD, is also part of the alliance.

“Sending Hemant Soren to jail without any evidence for five months upset Dalits, Adivasis, backward classes and castes in general,” Kumar said.

Hemant Soren was released from jail on June 28 after the high court granted him bail in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. He had resigned as CM shortly before his arrest on January 31 by the ED.

When asked if an agreement has been reached among the members of the ruling coalition to contest the assembly elections under the leadership of Hemant Soren, the Congress leader asserted that there is hardly any difference of opinion on the issue.

"The changing of the guard was made possible by the unanimity of the MLAs and coalition partners," he said. The leaders and MPs of the ruling coalition in a meeting unanimously decided to elect Hemant Soren as the leader of the JMM legislative party. Following this development, Champai Soren resigned as chief minister and Hemant replaced him.

There is no scope for the opposition to make it an issue before the elections as Champai Soren had already made it clear that Hemant and JMM supremo Sibu Soren are their leaders.

The BJP has been claiming that tribal leaders outside Sibu Soren's family have no political future in JMM.

“The situation has worsened for the Jharkhand BJP as people have rejected Babulal Marandi's leadership. He will have a tough task to save his seat,” Kumar stated.

Marandi is the president of the Jharkhand unit of the BJP and a former chief minister.
