India came into Saturday's title clash as one of two unbeaten teams alongside South Africa. Player of the match Virat Kohli stepped up when he mattered most with a 59-ball 76 to help India to a competitive 176/7, the highest total in a Men's T20 World Cup final.

His 72-run fourth-wicket stand with Axar Patel, who made 47 off 31 balls, and a 57-run partnership with Shivam Dube, who made 27 off 16 balls, helped India surpass the 175-run mark as they got 42 runs in the last three overs.

In response, South Africa was in sight to reduce the total. But Hardik beating Heinrich Klaasen propelled India back into the match and emerged victorious to end an 11-year long global trophy drought while restricting South Africa to 169/8. While Pandya took 3-20, Player of the Tournament Jasprit Bumrah shone with 2-18.

"As we lift the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 trophy, I am overwhelmed by the pride of Team India. Our journey in this tournament has been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with determination, resilience and moments that will go down in history The victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of every player, coach and support staff involved.

"I want to thank our fans whose unwavering support fueled our determination on the field. It is a privilege to see such a talented group of people who have shown immense character and skill throughout the tournament," Sreesanth said on the show 'Caught and Bold' by Hot Star from Disney+.

India now joins the West Indies and England as two-time winners of the Men's T20 World Cup, and also bid a victorious farewell to head coach Rahul Dravid. It also meant that Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma stopped playing T20Is for India at a glorious level.

"This victory is not just for us but for all Indian cricket lovers who share our passion and belief. Let us celebrate this win and hope for more successes in the future," Sreesanth added.
