New Delhi, President Draupadi Murmu on Thursday said India is the world's third largest domestic aviation market and tier 2 and 3 cities have benefited from the growth in flight routes in the last 10 years.

In his address at the joint meeting of Parliament, Murmu said that the country has grown at an average rate of 8 percent annually from 2021 to 2024.

He emphasized that in 10 years, India has become the 5th largest economy from 11th position.

"India is the third largest domestic aviation market in the world," he said, adding that there were only 209 airline routes in April 2014, which will increase to 605 by April 2024.

“This increase in aviation routes has directly benefited tier-2 and tier-3 cities,” he said.

Demand for air traffic is increasing and airlines are expanding their fleets to fly more people, while the number of airports is also increasing.

According to the latest official data, during the January-May 2024 period, domestic airlines carried 661.42 lakh passengers, compared to 636.07 lakh in the year-ago period.

Murmu, in his address, also said that the government is working to make India's public transport system one of the best in the world.
