Gurugram: A cow vigilante was allegedly shot by cattle smugglers near Mahu-Chopta village in Nuh district of Haryana in the early hours of Saturday.

The victim, identified as Sonu Sarpanch, a native of Rewari district, was taken to a private hospital in Faridabad, from where he was referred to Medanta Medicity in Gurugram, where he is being treated, he said.

Nuh Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarnia said that the incident took place on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway when the cow vigilantes were chasing a vehicle of cattle smugglers.

Bijarnia said that as per the complaint, an FIR will be registered in the matter soon.

He told that the victim Sonu is undergoing treatment at Medanta Medicity.

Chaman Khatana, a cow vigilante, said the incident occurred around 4:45 am on Saturday when a team of seven cow vigilantes chased the pickup jeep of the cow smugglers.

Khatana told that the pickup jeep of the smugglers overturned on the road near Mau-Chopta village, after which they started running away and one was caught by the cow vigilantes.

He told that when Sonu caught hold of the other cow smuggler, the other cow smugglers opened fire and he got seriously injured after being shot in the stomach.

After getting information about the incident, cow protectors gathered outside Medanta Hospital. Expressing anger over the incident, he demanded protection for cow protectors.

Hindu organization leader Kulbhushan Bhardwaj said that licensed weapons should be provided to cow protectors.
