New Delhi, The Delhi High Court has asked the Delhi Chief Secretary to decide on a representation to direct him to conduct a house-to-house survey to find out the number of senior citizens in the city and build homes for the elderly in every district. .

The High Court said that the petition seeking directions should be treated as a representation which will be decided expeditiously, preferably within 12 weeks.

“This Court directs to treat the present writ petition as a representation to the Chief Secretary, Government of Delhi, who in turn is directed to take a decision, as expeditiously as possible, in accordance with law, preferably within twelve (12) weeks . ,” a bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan Singh and Justice Manmeet PS Arora said.

The court passed the order while disposing of a petition filed by Salek Chand Jain, who had also sought directions from the court to the Delhi Police to maintain a separate data of crimes being committed against senior citizens.

Advocate Dinesh P Rajbhar, appearing for the petitioner, said that at present there are only two government or aided old age homes in Delhi.

One is in Bindapur, which is being run by the Delhi government on a private-public partnership (PPP) model, and the other is in Lampur which is funded by the Delhi government, he said.

The lawyer said another senior citizens home is run by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).

He said that senior citizens are neglected and discriminated by their own families and they need special care, love and affection.

The petitioner said that he made several representations to the authorities but they did not take any decision, due to which he had to approach the court.
