Kathmandu [Nepal], Nepal's Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), another ally of Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda's government, abandoned it ahead of a confidence vote scheduled for next week.

The Janata Samajbadi Party, led by Ashok Rai, informed the prime minister of the withdrawal of support on Friday afternoon and two cabinet ministers also tendered his resignation.

"We wish to inform you (the Prime Minister) that the support given to the government formed under your leadership has been withdrawn with effect from today as per the decision of the party meeting held on Friday," Rai said in a letter to the Prime Minister. Minister Dahal, who is also the leader of the JSP parliamentary party.

Following the presentation of the letter to the Prime Minister, Health and Population Minister Pradeep Yadav, Forest and Environment Minister Nawal Kishor Sah Sudi and Minister of State for Health Hasina Khan of the party also submitted their resignations.

The newly formed JSP has seven members in the House of Representatives.

With its main allies now gone, the minority government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, which will face the confidence vote on July 12, now has a total of 62 votes in its favour.

The Maoist Center led by Dahal himself has 32 seats, the Rastriya Swatantra Party has 20 and the CPN-Unified Socialist Party has 10 seats.

Earlier on Wednesday (July 3), the government's key ally, the CPN-UML (Unified Marxist Leninist), had left the government forging an alliance with the Nepali Congress. On March 4, Dahal had left the Nepali Congress to form a government in support of the CPN-UML.

The Rastriya Swatantra Party, embroiled in conflicts and controversies, has decided to continue with the government followed by the CPN-US, the splinter party of the CPN-UML.

Meanwhile, Dahal decided to request a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on July 12. The Prime Minister sent a letter to the Parliament Secretariat asking it to organize the vote.
