The Home Department will this year add the latest list of websites hosting child sexual exploitation material provided by UK-based non-profit organization Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to its existing filter van. Welden added.

The IWF filter is updated daily, using both human analysis and artificial intelligence to identify webpages confirmed to host this illegal content, Xinhua news agency reported.

"This is a major step forward in protecting children from being re-traumatized by sharing records of abuse online, as well as preventing New Zealanders from viewing this material, including children having unintended access to it," the minister said. " The number of URLs blocked for minors on any given day in New Zealand ranges from about 700 to 30,000.

The digital child exploitation filter is currently fully operational in New Zealand as well as Samoa and Tonga, and work is underway to extend it to the Cook Islands, he said, adding that the filter prevents criminal content, including those involving children. Other adult content that is legal in New Zealand will not be blocked.
