Braunschweig (Germany): India's top-ranked tennis player Sumit Nagal advanced to the second round with an easy win over Brazil's Felipe Meligeni Alves at the Braunschweig ATP Challenger here on Tuesday.

Second seed Nagal, who has qualified for the Olympics, won 6-1, 6-4 over Alves in the clay event.

The world number 73 will face Argentina's Pedro Cachin in the round of 16 on Wednesday.

The tournament will serve as preparation for the Paris Olympics, which begin at the Roland Garros Stadium later this month.

Last week, Nagal was eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon after losing to Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic.

Nagal is enjoying a dream season as he also qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open earlier this year. He defeated 31st seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the opening round, becoming the first Indian male tennis player to defeat a seeded player in a Slam in 35 years.

He also qualified for the main draws of the Indian Wells Masters and Monte-Carlo Masters, ATP 1000 events.

The Indian player has won two Challenger events this season, Heilbronn Challenger and Chennai Open ATP Challenger. He also participated in the French Open and lost in the preliminary round.
