Only four positive cases of malaria were reported in Kohima, Nagaland last year, while there were no deaths due to the disease, an official said on Thursday.

Nagaland observed World Malaria Day across the state on Thursday to “accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world” and a state-level program was organized at the Secretariat Conference Hall here.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. E Motsuthung Patton, Principal Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare, said, like many others, Nagaland has also felt the devastating impact of malaria for a long time.

“The impact this has had on our families, our communities and our economy cannot be underestimated,” he said.

"Even in the face of such adversity, we have shown resilience, determination and innovation in our efforts to control and ultimately eliminate this disease by 2030," he said.

The data provided by the department for the last six years said the highest number of malaria positive cases was 20 in 2019. Last year it dropped to four, while there were no malaria-related deaths during these years.

The Principal Director of the Department said, the journey has been challenging, but it has also been a journey of hope and success.

“We have made significant achievements in districts like Mokokchung, Longleng and Zunheboto, where no cases of malaria have been reported for the last three years,” he said.
