Kohima, Nagaland State Disability Forum (NSDF) on Monday urged all political parties and candidates contesting the Lok Sabha elections in the state to include policies and programs for the welfare of persons with disabilities (PWD) in their election manifestos.

This appeal comes after the release of the 'Manifesto: For and by Citizens with Disabilities' in the light of the envisaged General Elections 2024 by the National Disability Network (NDN) and the National Committee on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (NCRPD), NSDF. President Vikenganu Fatima Kera said this during a press conference here.

He said there are 29,361 disabled people in Nagaland in general, while the Chief Electoral Officer Nagaland has said that 6,707 disabled people are registered in the voter list.

Saying that NSDF supports the manifesto brought by national bodies for the disabled, he said, “All political parties should consider us as part of the development agenda.,

“PWDs have been neglected in all walks of life for a long time and we cannot wait any longer and see them being deprived of their rights,” he said.

He said the NSDF along with the NDA and the NCRPD want the political parties to consider at least ten of their demands, which include five per cent budgetary allocation for the disabled, providing health insurance policy to all disabled people, accessible and inclusive public and private buildings. , involves providing the product. Services, public transport facilities and communication systems.

NSDF General Secretary, Ash H Kiba and Joint Secretary Ngougongbe highlighted other demands, such as social security in the form of one nation one pension, standard of Rs 5,000 per month, socio-political inclusion, access to work for young and old Economic participation by providing. and providing medium scale enterprises, gender equality, accessible and sports infrastructure to para-athletes.NSDF officials also said that they are serious about their demands and will soon hold separate meetings with all the candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Nagaland.

Kiba, Secretary General of the Forum, said, "These demands encapsulate the essential needs of persons with disabilities that any incoming government must address or prioritize."

He said that the Election Commission of India is taking measures to facilitate registration and voting of persons with disabilities by providing necessary assistance and NSDF appreciates these efforts and hopes that this will lead to inclusion and representation in the electoral process for persons with disabilities.
