Stavanger [Norway], The sixth round of the ongoing Norway Chess 2024 witnessed exciting developments at the Sparebank 1 SR-Bank in Stavanger on Sunday.

In the battle between young Alireza Firoza and Praggnananda, Firoza maintained a consistent lead throughout the game, however Firoza could not convert this lead into victory and the game ended peacefully.

Meanwhile, defending world champion Ding Liren continued to struggle in the classical games, as he made a mistake in his mate-in-two strategy in a tie against Magnus Carlsen. This is Ding's fourth consecutive defeat. With this win, Magnus Carlsen has overtaken Hikaru Nakamura on the leaderboard and has taken the top spot entering the final week of the tournament. The game between Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura ended in a draw relatively quickly, with Caruana scoring a crucial win in the Armageddon game, "revenge" for Nakamura's win in the first Armageddon game earlier in the tournament. This win will likely be a huge confidence boost for Caruana after two disappointing tours.

At the Norway Chess Women's Tournament, there were exciting developments, although all games went without any major mistakes until the final game, a release said.

Especially the game between Xu Wenjun and Vaishali Rameshbabu was highly anticipated as it could affect the leaderboard. While the game was fairly balanced till the end, Xu Wenjun won against Vaishali when Vaishali ran into a timing problem.Another important match between Anna Muzychuk and Lei Tingjie, which could affect the leaderboard, ended in a draw. However, Anna Muzychuk won the Armageddon game and thus moved ahead of Vaishali by half a point in the leaderboard. Muzychuk is now leading the competition for the first time.
