Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole launched a scathing attack on the BJP-Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena government and alleged that there was widespread corruption in the construction of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri- Nhava Seva Atal Setu in Navi. Nana Patole said, "I want to ask the government a question. This year, Mumbai has not received the kind of rain it usually receives, otherwise the entire road would have been washed away. On the road without heavy rain, if there is a crack of 2 to 2.5 feet long, what can we do with it? They (the government) do not care that people die. There is corruption in the construction of Atal Setu and the access road. They hide the truth but they accepted that. There's a crack."
He further said, "The bridge was inaugurated in 3 months and how did a crack develop so quickly on the link road? If the government lies to hide its sins, that is its problem, and then it is its problem."
On Friday, Nana Patole claimed that there are cracks in Atal Setu and inspected the bridge.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Friday said minor cracks were found on the approach road connecting Atal Setu at Ulwe, which is not part of the bridge but is a service road connecting the bridge.
MMRDA stated that the cracks are not due to structural defects of the project and do not pose any threat to the bridge structure.
The MMRDA also termed the news as "rumours" and urged citizens not to believe them.
According to MMRDA, these minor cracks were already noticed at three places on ramp number 5, from Ulwe towards Mumbai, on Thursday during an inspection by the project's operation and maintenance team and require immediate repair. Strabag, the contractor for Package 4 of the Atal Setu project, has started repair work in the said area and the work will be completed within 24 hours without any disruption to traffic on the bridge.
The official statement reads: "It has been observed that there is no crack in the main part of the Atal Setu Bridge, but rumors are being spread in various media about this. Please do not believe the rumours. Minor cracks have been found in the access. Road connecting Atal Setu. The said path is not part of the main bridge, but is a service road that connects the bridge.
