Mumbai, Maharashtra Congress on Thursday protested at the Bandra Kurla Complex here demanding an immediate ban on the installation of smart meters by the Adani Group.

The opposition party also opposed the increase in electricity rates in the state.

Maharashtra Congress working president Naseem Khan said that Adani Electricity has increased electricity rates and is robbing Mumbaikars in the guise of smart meters.

“We demand that the installation of smart meters be stopped and the increase in electricity rates be immediately rolled back,” Khan said.

The party said its 'morcha' was stopped by the police.

Later, a delegation led by Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar met representatives of Adani Electricity.

Mumbai Congress President and Mumbai North Central MP Varsha Gaikwad, Rajya Sabha MP Chandrakant Handore and MLC Bhai Jagtap took part in the protest.

Last year, Adani Group had won two contracts worth Rs 13,888 crore from state-owned discoms to install smart meters.

According to an official release from the discom, a total of six tenders were awarded by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to install smart meters, two of which were won by Adani Group.
