The situation in Jiribam district of Imphal, Manipur, remained tense but "under control" on Sunday after suspected militants set ablaze two police posts and at least 70 houses in a fresh incident of violence in the state, police said.

He said that after the incident on Saturday evening, additional security forces have been deployed in the affected areas.

Manipur Police said, "The situation is tense but under control in the wake of the violent disturbances that broke out in Jiribam district, in which miscreants torched two police pickets, a One Beat office and several houses of both Meitei and Kuki communities." said in a statement.

"Police are also actively monitoring social media updates that may incite communal sentiments among communities and request the general public to avoid spreading baseless/unverified information," it said.

Violence broke out in the ethnic strife-torn state of Jiribam on Thursday evening, when suspected militants killed a 59-year-old man.

An official had said that the man, Soibam Sharatkumar Singh, had gone missing on June 6 after going to his fields and was later found with wounds caused by a sharp object on his body.

Meanwhile, an angry mob stopped a truck in Sorok Atingbi Khunau late Saturday night and allegedly set fire to essential commodities being carried in it, a police officer said.

He said a contingent of over 70 state police commandos was airlifted from Imphal to Jiribam to assist security personnel in the operation against terrorists.

About 239 Meitei people, mostly women and children, were evacuated from the peripheral areas of Jiribam on Friday and taken to a newly established relief camp at a multi-sports complex in the district, officials said.
