Mumbai: The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police on Tuesday arrested Kamala Mills owner and real estate developer Ramesh Gowani in a Rs 67.50 crore fraud case, an official said.

Govani, who also works as a director of a private land development company, allegedly purchased a project in Mumbai's Khardanda area but failed to pay the amount of Rs 67.50 crore to the complainant, the officer said.

Repeated demands for payment were ignored by Govani, following which the complainant approached the EOW and lodged a complaint.

Subsequently, a case was registered against Gowani under sections 409 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (fraudulently and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

The official said Govani was called for questioning at the EOW office on Tuesday, where he was arrested for his alleged involvement in the fraud case.

Notably, Govani was earlier arrested in connection with the massive fire that broke out at two rooftop pubs in the Kamla Mills complex in central Mumbai on December 29, 2017, in which 14 people died.
