CHENNAI: Slain BSP Tamil Nadu president K Armstrong was laid to rest in neighboring Tiruvallur district on Monday, hours after the Madras High Court rejected the family's plea to bury the body at the party office here.

The last rites were performed at Pothur in Tiruvallur at the end of a heavily attended funeral procession of about eight hours from the city.

Following the court order, the body was taken in a procession under police protection. Political leaders including VCK founder Thol Thirumavalavan were present during the burial.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) state president Armstrong was killed by a group of armed assailants near his residence on Friday.

BSP supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, Mayawati, who paid tribute to her murdered party colleague here on Sunday, demanded a CBI probe into the murder to ensure justice for the family.

The family of the deceased had knocked on the doors of Madras HC to bury Armstrong's mortal remains at the BSP office, but the court rejected it and allowed interment at the late leader's relative's property in nearby Tiruvallur. ,

Armstrong's wife had moved the high court with the said petition, which came up before Justice V Bhavani Subbaroyan in a special sitting.

The state government had opposed the family's plea, saying the party office was located in a residential area. It later informed the court that permission for burial had been granted on the land of Armstrong's relative in Pothur and necessary orders had also been given for the process.

With the petitioner's proposal accepted, the judge directed that Armstrong's body be buried at Pothur.
