Mumbai: Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena on Saturday named MLC Anil Parab and party functionary JM Abhyankar as its candidates for the Mumbai Graduate and Mumbai Teacher constituencies respectively for the Legislative Council elections to be held on June 26.

Parab is a former state transport minister in the Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government. Abhyankar heads the Shiv Sena (UBT) teachers cell.

Of the 78 seats in the Legislative Council, Shiv Sena (undivided) has 1 member, NCP (undivided) has 9, Congress has 8 and BJP has 22 members. JD(U), Peasants and Workers Party and Rashtriya Samaj Party have one member each, while four are independent.21 seats are vacant.

Of the vacant seats, 12 members will be nominated by the Governor and nine will be elected through local body representatives.

Notably, following the split in these parties, most of the MLCs from Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party have moved to the camps led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar respectively.

Biennial elections for four Legislative Council seats – Mumbai Graduate Constituency, Konkan Graduate Constituency, Mumbai Teachers Constituency and Nashik Teachers Constituency – became necessary as the tenure of the existing members expires in July.

The last date for filing nomination is June 7. Voting will take place on June 26 and the results will be declared on July 1.Parab claimed that since the Mumbai graduates constituency has been under the control of Shiv Sena (undivided) for the last 30 years, his victory is certain on the strength of the work done by Shiv Sainiks and the confidence expressed in the party's graduate voters.

"For Shiv Sainiks, the other party's candidate is unimportant. They have a large number of registered voters in this constituency. We have a strong hold here," said Parab, a two-time MLC and MLA. It is certain.''Kota, Toll Reporter.

Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena is an ally of NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar and Congress) in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

Parab claimed that the BJP cannot allot the Mumbai graduates constituency to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

“BJP has claimed this constituency. Therefore, I do not think this seat will be given to Shinde group.Even if (former MLC) Deepak Sawant is nominated (by the Shinde-led Shiv Sena), I don't think," he said, adding that the BJP will work for him.

Parab also said that even though 40 Shiv Sena (undivided) MLAs have defected (to the Shinde camp after the 2022 split), Shiv Sainiks at the grassroots level are with Uddhav Thackeray.

He said, "Shiv Sena workers are intact. Therefore our victory is certain."

Of the four seats falling vacant, the Mumbai teachers constituency is currently held by MVA ally JD(U)'s Kapil Patil. The other three retired members are: Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Vilas Potnis (Mumba graduate), BJP's Niranjan Davkhare (Konkan graduate), and independent ML Kishore Darade, who is supporting the ruling Shiv Sena, whose term ends on July 7.
