At least one person died and five others went missing after a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains in Gangtok, Sikkim. Officials gave this information on Thursday.
He said several roads were blocked due to landslides and many houses were submerged or damaged, while electric poles were washed away.
The body of one person was found in Pakshep area of Mangan, while three people were missing from Ambithang near Rangrang and two others went missing from Pakshep.
Three houses were damaged in Gethang, while several houses were damaged in Nampathang near Pentok and roads were blocked, he said.The Bringbong police post was shifted to another nearby location due to landslides, while the foundation of a bridge at Sankalan was damaged.
Officials said mobile network services were affected in North Sikkim, while a request was made by the district administration to send SDRF team with rations to Mangan.
Meanwhile, Mangan District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chhetri called an urgent meeting with all the heads of various departments to defuse the situation.
Earthmover was deployed to remove debris from the road near Mangshila Degree College.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who is in Arunachal Pradesh to attend the swearing-in ceremony of BJP leader Pema Khandu, spoke to officials of the northern district administration, police and other departments to ensure prompt response to the devastation."Efforts are underway to provide all possible assistance to the victims and affected families, including recovery assistance, temporary settlement and provision of basic needs," Tamang said in a statement.
"The state government stands firmly with the victims of this unfortunate incident and promises to extend maximum assistance to the bereaved families and all those affected and displaced by the landslide," he said.
He will soon return to the state to personally monitor the rescue and relief operations.
