New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Center to file its reply within two weeks on a plea seeking directions to fill the vacancies in the National Human Rights Commission.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala asked the Center to inform it about the steps taken and time required to fill the vacancies in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The petition has been posted for hearing on July 29.

The top court was hearing a petition filed by lawyer Radhakant Tripathi, seeking directions to fill the vacant posts.

Tripathi said that NHRC is working with only one member.

The Center had earlier appointed Vijaya Bharati Sayani as acting chairperson after former apex court judge Arun Mishra stepped down.

Sayani, a practicing lawyer in the Telangana High Court, was appointed as an NHRC member in December 2023.

According to the NHRC, Sayani handled women harassment and dowry cases, provided free legal aid to people from economically weaker sections.
