Chennai: With many parts of Tamil Nadu in the grip of heat wave, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday called on people to take adequate precautions and protect their health.

The Regional Meteorological Centre, (RMC) has warned of heat wave conditions in the northern interior region of the state and the day temperature is likely to rise by two or four degrees Celsius above normal in parts of interior Tamil Nadu.

The temperature remains around 38 to 42 degrees Celsius.

“Although summers are usually the hottest months, the temperatures are increasing day by day. It is the duty of the government to protect the people. Therefore, held a detailed review meeting with government department officials at the Secretariat on Wednesday,” the Chief Minister said in a release here.

The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that high temperatures and heat wave conditions may persist in the interior districts of northern Tamil Nadu for the next 5 days, he said and called for taking measures to protect themselves from the rising mercury.

Children, school students, elderly, pregnant women and people with health problems should take proper precautions and avoid stepping out.

“In the summer heat there is excessive sweating and the body becomes dehydrated. Doctors say it can cause symptoms like excessive thirst, headache, fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps, fainting and convulsions. Therefore, drink water frequently,” advised the Chief Minister.

Apart from this, people can increase the intake of buttermilk, rice porridge, lemon juice etc. He advocated wearing cotton clothes and a hat and for people to rest under the shade if they had to step out of their homes.

The release quoting the Chief Minister said that government medical facilities have been directed to treat the affected people on priority basis.
