Mumbai: The body of a 32-year-old woman, who had an abortion following prenatal sex determination test in Karnataka, was recovered from a car in Maharashtra's Sangli district, police said on Tuesday.

Police have detained three family members of the deceased woman, whose body was found in a car in Sangli town on Monday, an official said.

He said that all three have been handed over to Karnataka Police.

He told that the woman, resident of Miraj taluka, has two children and her husband is in the army.

According to police, the woman was taken to a hospital in Chikodi town in Belagavi district of neighboring Karnataka, where her family allegedly got her prenatal gender test done.

She then underwent an abortion, during which she died, but the hospital refused to issue a death certificate saying the woman was a resident of Maharashtra, the official said.

The woman's family took possession of her body and took it to Sangli, he said.

The officer said that police received information about the dead body in the car and stopped the vehicle at the bus stop.

"We took cognizance of the incident but did not register a case. After the post-mortem, we informed Karnataka Police as the death occurred under their jurisdiction," he said.
