New Delhi [India], While the national capital is witnessing the highest temperature at times and no immediate relief in sight, Delhi Metro is quietly providing its best services across the network by running more than 4,200 train trips across nearly 1.40 lakh km . Daily. Due to which passengers will get much needed relief along with pleasant travel experience in 24 degree Celsius temperature.

Throughout May, when the heat was at its peak and the temperature even crossed the 50 degree mark for the first time in India, Delhi Metro offered its services in the most reliable and comfortable manner and better than any of its trains or underground stations. No breakdowns or AC failure reported, as designed. For air conditioning.

Currently DMRC has a fleet of more than 345 trains with approximately 5000 AC units installed. To ensure that all AC units perform at their best during peak summer, a comprehensive health checkup of these AC units is carried out before the start of summer in March every year.

In this check-up, it is ensured that the faulty components, if any, are removed timely and replaced with healthy components so as to provide uninterrupted cooling experience to its passengers during peak summers. Apart from this, regular maintenance of these AC units is also done every three months. Additionally, train operators also regularly monitor coach temperatures to promptly address any issues related to temperature variations and ensure a pleasant travel experience for passengers.

Similarly, all underground stations are also equipped with state-of-the-art Building Management System (BMS) and Chiller Plan Manager (CPM) for remote monitoring and control of air conditioning equipment/units.The system continuously monitors ambient and station temperatures on a real-time basis and takes action to maintain the station temperature between 25 and 27 °C, even when the outside temperature ranges between 45 to 50 °C.

Regular inspections are being carried out on heat-sensitive infrastructure components such as escalators and lifts to prevent breakdowns. The frequency of maintenance checks on heat-sensitive types of equipment also increases during such periods. To prevent any incident of fire, which is a common occurrence during such heat waves, DMRC has a robust system of fire extinguishers and pipes at its stations which are regularly maintained, Especially at strategic locations in and around the metro complex. Sprinkler systems are regularly checked and maintained so that they can be activated immediately in case of fire.It is noteworthy to mention that the average passenger journeys observed in May 2024 recorded an all-time high of 60.17 lakh as against 52.41 lakh recorded in May 2023. This is a testament to the fact that apart from the popularity of the metro, normalcy has returned after the Covid pandemic. As a preferred mode of transportation during these scorching days.

Apart from operations, on the project (construction) front also, DMRC has implemented a provision to provide breaks to the workforce during the afternoon due to the ongoing heat. Other essential provisions like drinking water and medical facilities have also been made available at all our sites. It has been ensured that the workforce is not exposed to excessive heat. All project managers have been instructed to monitor that these instructions are strictly followed by the contractors.
