New Delhi: TMC deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Sagarika Ghose on Wednesday wrote to President Jagdeep Dhankhar urging him to delete Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comments made in the House on the Chopra and Sandeshkhali incidents in West Bengal.

In a letter to Dhankhar, Ghose quoted excerpts from the Prime Minister's response to the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President's speech where he mentioned the Chopra incident and also made a reference to Sandeshkhali.

"I would like to point out that as far as the Chopra incident is concerned, the perpetrators have been swiftly arrested and are behind bars," Ghose said, adding that the West Bengal police are "resolutely pursuing the investigation" and "all the culprits will be brought to justice."

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP said that as far as the West Bengal government is concerned, there is zero tolerance for crimes against women and the law takes its course without fear or favour.

About Sandeshkhali, he said, "The entire incident was nothing but a shameful conspiracy by the BJP to defame the people of Bengal. Blatant lies were told and false rape allegations were organized through payments to helpless women."

"The people of Sandeshkhali and Bengal gave a befitting response and the BJP lost the elections," he said.

"I ask you to note that when the Honorable Prime Minister speaks in the House he must give a complete and non-selective picture of the incidents. The Prime Minister must not abuse his constitutional position by misleading the public. Therefore, I ask him to kindly delete the comments," Ghose said.

Prime Minister Modi, during his response in Rajya Sabha, accused the opposition of having a selective stance on incidents of violence against women.

Referring to the Chopra incident in West Bengal, Modi said, "A woman was being whipped in public. The woman was screaming but no one came forward to help her and instead they were taking videos."

"And the incident that happened in Sandeshkhali, the pictures are horrifying. But since yesterday I have been seeing staunch politicians, there is no visible pain even in their words," he said.
