Los Angeles (AFP) - Filmmaker Blitz Bazewule, best known for directing the critically acclaimed film "The Color Purple," will direct the upcoming "Black Samurai" film for Warner Bros.

According to entertainment news outlet Variety, the Hollywood studio has acquired the rights to "Black Samurai" after a competitive bidding process.

The project is set to tell the story of Yasuke, a Japanese samurai of African descent who fought under Oda Nobunaga, a Japanese warlord during the 1580s.

The character has inspired several artists to write books and create projects about him, the most recent being the Netflix animated show "Yasuke", voiced by Lakeith Stanfield.

Ghanaian filmmaker, writer and musician Bazawule has written the script and will also produce through his banner Inward Gaze.

“Black Samurai” reunites the director with Warner Bros., which also backed his 2023 musical drama “The Color Purple,” starring Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks and Colman Domingo.

His other feature projects include "The Burial of Kojo", "Black is King" and the short film "Diasporadical Trilogia".
