He said that with the construction of check dam on Silanti river, Amravati basin will turn into desert in a short time.

The senior leader said the water flow of Silanthi river, a tributary of Amaravati river, would be disrupted and there would be shortage of water to irrigate 55,000 acres of agricultural land in Tirupur and Karur districts of Tamil Nadu.

Dhinakaran demanded that the Chief Minister immediately intervene in the matter and find a solution.

It may be recalled that farmers of Tiruppur and Karur had taken out a protest march against the Kerala government building a check dam on the Silanthi river, which had rendered agricultural lands in the district barren.

Velu Sivakumar, deputy general secretary of the farmers wing of Dalit political party Viduthalai Chiruthigal Katchi (VCK), had told IANS that farmers would start a protest in front of the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department in Dharmapuram on May 27.
